This week, Ava Seto (Cluster 6) representing UCSC’s Macrocosm, interviewed Cluster Assistant Jing Xiong, who discussed her academic journey, research, and advice for COSMOS students.
Macrocosm: Could you briefly introduce yourself?
Jing Xiong: My name is Jing Xiong. I am a 5th year PhD student studying electrical and computer engineering. My research consists of applying deep learning methods to analyze data in power systems. One example of this is non-intrusive load monitoring which measures how much energy certain household appliances consume. I develop deep-learning models that can extract patterns from data and lead to more accurate load forecasts. M: Would you like to share any fun facts about yourself?
JX: I really enjoy traveling and I have been to 33 provinces in China. I would recommend that people go to Chongqing if they ever visit. |
JX: My favorite part is the campus and the ocean view. It helps relieve me of my frustrations when I get stuck in my research.
JX: My bachelor degree was automation. After I graduated, I went to a utility company that helped fuel my interest in power systems. I was also fascinated by how powerful machine learning was, so I wanted to learn more about it and see if it could be related to power systems.
JX: My favorite part is developing models that can predict results better than the baseline data. The most challenging part is developing models that build upon and are more efficient than the current models.
JX: I would like to pursue a job where I can apply machine learning and load forecasting. I am also considering being a data scientist.
JX: They need to enjoy and be proficient in math and coding. This will prepare them for the fundamentals of electrical engineering in their bachelor’s.
JX: I would suggest that they study math and programming if they are considering pursuing a career in engineering. They can also participate in robotic competitions and coding courses. Otherwise, I would suggest that students enjoy their time in high school because the friends that they make might become their best friends for life.
